The Birth of a Writer:

My first and most favorite character, Hooty, is the reason I am a writer. This ornery owl challenged my friends, April and Ben Sanderson, throughout his rehabilitation. After, of course, he flew into the side of their van and injured his wing. I made up this story years ago, entertaining my children on long drives. Changes in the story (due to either creativity or short-term memory loss) frustrated my youngest until one day, after correcting me on the details many times, he insisted that I write it down. After many false starts I finally got serious about it and found a new love - writing.

Today's Hooty is a whole lot different from the short story I shared with my kids in the car - but the good news is, they like it anyway. I hope you will too.
